6 DIY Decorations to Get You In the Holiday Spirit

Christmas is right around the corner, which means you need to pull every trick in the book to turn your home into the holiest, holiest winter wonderland before the season is over. Decorating for Christmas and the holidays is so much fun, but it can also be expensive at the same time. Due to the pandemic and supply chain issues this year, consumers have experienced nearly 20% price increases on both artificial and real trees, as well as decorations. While it’s easy to shop at the store for all things holiday-themed, it can definitely burn a hole in your wallet, so why not try something different?

DIY decorations are a great way to save money, get creative and spend some quality time with family and friends. There’s nothing like having a homemade ornament or decorative piece to remember the holidays for years to come, and it’s not too late to start now! If you’re looking for new, inexpensive ways to decorate your home just in time for Christmas, here are some festive DIY projects that won’t break the budget!

1. Paper Snowflakes: Paper snowflakes are one of the easiest and cheapest DIY projects you can do for the holiday season, requiring just a few items to create a beautiful set of decorations. Starting with paper (or colored cardboard, whatever is available to you), fold the piece diagonally in half to make a triangle, then fold that piece in half to make another triangle, and follow the rest of the instructions as indicated by Martha. Stewart in her tutorial. By using a few different cutting methods, you can make several unique snowflake designs that are bound to amaze any guests you welcome!

2. DIY Christmas Wreath: Another simple and easy DIY decoration to make for your home is a Christmas wreath! Most stores sell regular wreaths at an affordable price. From there, the world is your oyster, and you can really do just about anything you want to decorate. Like sports? Make a wreath for your favorite sports team with colored ribbon and mini ornaments. Do you have a favorite color scheme? Add your most loved colors with plastic flowers, ribbons, bows and more.

3. Salt Dough Ornaments: If you like to get your hands dirty and make a little mess, salt dough ornaments are perfect for you. Easy and inexpensive, salt dough ornaments can be made with just a few household staples: flour, table salt, and water—that’s it! Combine 4 cups of flour with 1 cup of salt and 1.5 cups of water, mix it into a dough, then roll it and cut your shapes! Holiday themed cookie cutters work really well in this case, try using snowflakes, gingerbread cookies, candy canes, ornaments or tree shaped cookie cutters for a nice effect. Once cut, place pieces in the oven at 300 for one hour or until hard, then start painting, glittering, etc. to decorate!

4. DIY Snowglobes: Nothing beats the beauty of a snow globe. In Santa Claus, Scott Calvin found the magic of Christmas in a special snow globe and you can do the same! Go to the dollar store to get an empty snow globe container, then create your own world inside it with little trees, fake snow, mini villagers and figurines. You can get really creative and make the project personal for you or as a gift for your friends or family. For a little extra pizazz, use glitter paint or sharpie markers to label the snow globe with the year, your family name, or a special holiday message!

5. Pompom Christmas Tree: The standard Christmas tree is beautiful, sure, but you might want to go an alternative route and liven up the scene with a pompom tree! A pompom Christmas tree is a great way to bring uniqueness and color to your home decor, and it only takes a few items to pull it all together! Start with a styrofoam cone, then get a bag of pom poms (they can be green, pink, red, gold or whatever color you want) and glue them to the cone with a hot glue gun.

6. Wall Art on a Budget: If you go to a regular store, holiday themed wall art can cost a fortune, but you can make your own wall art for just a few dollars with a picture frame and your printer. The dollar store has several frames of different sizes, from 4×6 to 5×7 and even 8×10. Grab some frames, a few sheets of scrapbook letter stickers, and then head home to print out holiday backgrounds. Once printed, cut the paper to fit the frame and use stickers to write a holiday message on the paper, such as Merry Christmas or Ho Ho Ho!
