Latest releases from Away, Crate & Barrel and Panasonic

This story is part of Select’s New & Notable column, where we highlight our favorite product launches, big sales, what we’re buying and some of our latest recommendations and advice.

This week, a favorite luggage brand debuts a bucket bag and a bright color for its signature carry-on, a popular home decor store debuts a flurry of fall colors for its cookware and an appliance maker offers an easier way to make bread.

New this week

  1. Choose favorite luggage brand Away has launched a packable bucket bag made of lightweight, water-resistant nylon with a capacity of 25 litres. You can sling the bag over your shoulder or carry it by hand, according to Away. They’ve also added a teal colorway to their classic Carry-On bag. Both items are available online in time for Labor Day travel.

  2. Away isn’t the only company embracing teal. Home decor store Crate & Barrel has released five fall colors for its nonstick EvenCook Core cookware: Gray, Cream, Denim, Terracotta and — there it is — Deep Teal. The eight-piece collection includes, among other things, a saucepan, Dutch oven, two frying pans and a sauté pan. The sets are available online and will be in store on September 5th.

  3. Panasonic has introduced an automatic bread maker that can make bread, dough, and also pasta, pizza, cakes and even jam. The machine has a dual temperature sensor that detects both internal and room temperatures, and automatically adjusts the dough rising and resting time for the perfectly baked bread.

On sale this week

Here are some of our favorite ongoing sales from brands and retailers we think you should know about.

  1. Alo Moves is offering 50% off monthly and annual memberships until 31 August.

  2. Alleyoop is offering up to 40% off sitewide until August 31st.

  3. The company store is offering up to 30% off during the half-yearly sale until August 28.

  4. Rifle Paper Co. is offering 25% off its furniture collection sale with code HOME25 until August 21.

  5. Madewell is offering 20% off for college students and teachers until August 29th.

Shopping news: Kohl’s expands Sephora to all stores

  1. Kohl’s has announced that it will add in-store Sephora stores in all of its 1,165 stores by the end of the year. It announced the partnership in 2020 and hopes it will introduce a younger group of consumers to its brand. The Sephora store-in-stores will stock all the products one would see at a regular Sephora store.

  2. Bath and Body Works, which makes some great home appliances (in addition to its famous soaps and lotions), has announced that they are cutting 130 positions. It is expected to save $30 million from the layoffs, which will be mostly leadership positions.

  3. Despite the cost of living crisis, some companies are focusing on their premium products. And surprisingly, customers love it, reports CNBC. For example, both Starbucks and Heinz have raised prices to offer more premium products such as unique coffees and “chef-inspired” sauces, respectively. People seem reluctant to spend, but if they do, they want a product with added value.

  4. Target’s quarterly profit fell by nearly 90% in the second quarter of 2022, reports CNBC. The big-box retailer says the profit hit was expected, as it cut prices earlier this year to clear surplus inventory.

  5. The new iPhone 14 has a new launch date, according to sources close to the matter. Apple should launch the new phone at an event on September 7, with new devices going on sale on September 16.

What we bought this week

Zoe Malin loves this supportive tank from Uniqlo. UNIQLO

Tank tops with built-in bras usually offer little to no support (at least for me), but this one from Uniqlo looked so good I had to try it. I was delighted that the construction was supportive and the cups were not flimsy like most tanks but stayed in one place as I moved around. The lightweight shirt is perfect for hot, humid days, and I wear it tucked into skirts or jeans. — Zoë Malinassociate update editor

Morgan Greenwald's dog Suzie loves this Disney chew toy from Pet Smart.

I recently bought my new puppy Suzie this spooky chew toy from Pet Smart’s Disney Villain themed dog toy line. What can I say? I love Halloween and I love Disney. The toy is very durable, which is great since Suzie loves to destroy everything. It’s also apple flavored, which Suzie and I are both ready for fall. — Morgan Greenwaldsenior SEO editor

I recently attended a very rustic wedding in rural Maine where I was assigned a cabin with no electricity, no air conditioning, and believe it or not, no bathroom (yes reader, I had to use an outside room). Thank goodness I had my portable 5-inch Treva fan. The simple, battery-powered fan has two speeds and a simple fold-down design that allows it to stand on its own or lay flat in its case. It kept me as cool as possible while I slept with the spiders in the top bunk, and I brought it into the outhouse with me to blow away any bloodthirsty mosquitoes. — Christina Colizzaeditor

What we recommended this week

  1. Staff writer Justin Redman wrote a comparison of Costco, BJ’s and Sam’s Club to highlight the differences in membership prices between the three warehouse clubs, including their perks and return policies

  2. To recommend the best and most loved products at Costco, editor Christina Colizza spoke with two Costco fanatics and Select staff about their favorite products and what makes the big-box retailer so special.

  3. Production Coordinator Gabrielle DePinho wrote about her love for Carbonara Stain Devils, which can remove all kinds of stains, such as blood, cooking oil, grass, coffee or even sweat, from fabric.

  4. To recommend the best equipment for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh, Zoe Malin spoke with a nutritionist and a Whole Foods produce category merchandiser.
