Looking for a unique gift or home decor? Check out The Strange and Unusual in downtown Greeley

A new store in downtown Greeley has some weird, unusual products that customers won’t find anywhere.

Owners Corri and Chase Mehan took over the shop a few months ago and is now home to The Strange and Unusual, formerly The Midwest Market.

“The previous owner has passed away and the family has all the inventory they don’t want to liquidate,” Corri said. “So when we came in, we were ready to sell.”

But with the Lincoln Park Mall and other antique stores nearby, it was a challenge to sell items that came with the store.

“We didn’t make it, so we were like, ‘You know what? We need to do what we want to do,'” Corey said.

That means carefully packing and moving all of their western-style inventory and replacing it with something weird like a jar of cured taxidermy, a human femur, true crime trading cards, a neat looking set of taxidermy Skin weasels and other fun items.

“We love quirky stores. We went to one in New Orleans and it really made us want to do it,” Corey said. “They’re all over Denver and Fort Collins, but there’s nothing here.”

The couple kept a corner to display some retro-inspired items from the Midwest market, including old suitcases, a few jackets and some toys.

“Wacky people like vintage stuff. So we tend to sell something here and there,” she said. “It will all pass eventually, but for now we’re just keeping it in good shape and stockpiling it.”

Walking into The Strange and Unusual is like being in a combination of museum and sideshow. Old photos and trinkets are scattered among modern objects, like a cross-stitch piece that reads “Ew, David,” and fans of the TV show “Schitt’s Creek” are sure to laugh.

Corri also has some of her own creations in the store.

“I make terrariums, I put flowers, insects and rocks together,” she said. “So you can look at the dead stuff, but it’s beautiful. It goes hand in hand with the stuff we love — these are weird stuff.”

It was Corri’s work that inspired them to start looking for a location to open their quirky store. The couple have spent their entire lives in the area, with Chase growing up in Windsor and Corey in Loveland, so finding a place in Greeley was a priority.

The couple traveled around Colorado for real estate sales, finding items for the store.

“I try to find something unique in every sale. I don’t go and wipe it all out like a lot of people do; I pick things,” Corey said. “I try to pick what fits the store. I don’t pick the cheap stuff; I pick the better stuff.

“I don’t want to think of myself as a second-hand or thrift store. I feel like I’m a high-end vintage store.”

The couple also visited other odd shops on the trip to see what they were carrying and how they were displayed.

While many quirky stores have a darker aesthetic, Mehans’ store is a combination of “pretty and dark.”

“I tried to make it look more elegant and creepy, like you could say ‘graceful dark,'” says Corri.

The shop also holds various courses such as introduction to tarot cards and making witch bells.

Classes run from 1pm to 3pm at the store at 906 9th Ave. with all supplies and instructions. Fees are $37 per person and guests of all ages are welcome.

Upcoming courses include:

  • Saturday 16 July: Tarot Introduction

  • Saturday, September 10: The Witch’s Bell
  • Saturday, October 22: Lunar Diary
